General History

Southend (Corporation) Transport ran trams from 1901 to 1942, motor buses in 1914-16, trolleybuses from 1925 to 1954 and motor buses again from 1932 onwards.  Initially only able to operate within the Borough, from 1955 the operating area expanded to almost 100 square miles through the Southend Coordination Area Agreement jointly with Eastern National.  Express coach operations started in 1980 with X1 to London and Heathrow (and on to Reading until 1982).  From October 1986 the undertaking became an “arms-length” company owned by the Council but was sold to British Bus in 1993 and is today part of the Arriva group.
